Twin Irises

Barbara Kile (Ft. Worth, United States) on 21 August 2009 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

This is another texture overlay and really one of my first 'experiments' with flowers and textures. I just moved the texture onto the image 'as is' just to see how it worked. It wasn't my intention to use this color but it kind of 'grew' on me. I think it works because anything in the 'yellow' family is a complimentary color to purple, so that may be why this background works. I attempted to make it an 'antique gold' color to keep the image bright and not drab.

This flower portrait was shot in my 'studio' against a white background and the texture was applied in PS followed by the Orton technique, which really enhanced the lighting and gave the image a nice 'glow.'

Texture by Ground Floor (actually the same texture as the 'Purple Glow' image 2 posts ago.) with a vignette applied in Nik software.

Anita from West Nottingham, United States

Gorgeous!!!! The texture complements the flowers perfectly. Vignetting is just right. Love the position of the flowers lower in the frame. Excellent detail in the flowers. Fantastic.

Question: After applying the texture, did you mask out the flower to help it show through the texture?

21 Aug 2009 1:22pm

@Anita: I went over the flower to paint out the texture at about 25% opacity. If I did more than that it became a tedious process to be too 'exact' on the flower painting. If I did less, then a quick swipe or 2 did the job for me. I guess if you use texture the same color as the flower you don't have to paint off the texture as much. Yours look great with the texture on the flower, but for this yellow/gold BG it affected the purple too much.

I love your textures - I must learn to use them myself!

Sweeet use of texture and then masking out the flower so as not to over power it with the texture! Nicely thought out and processed. Thanks for your comment. Steve
