Pretty in Pink

Posted by
Barbara Kile (Ft. Worth, United States) on 7 September 2009 in Art & Design and Portfolio.

Overlay of 2 textures and a combination of different blending modes. I used one of my own linen textures and combined it with a texture by Pareeerica.

VERY PRETTY! It's a candy-like-image!!!

I agree that a candy is what comes to my mind when looking at this image. Nice delicate colours, good composition, DOF and sharpness. The background is a bit strong to my taste and it draws my attention from the beautiful lily to darker corners.

@Tomas Turecek: Yes, very hard to decide how much of the texture to paint off. With this being a horizontal, there is a lot of frame to work with. Your eye should go to the lightest and brightest part of the image first, however I could have painted off more of the texture, if the texture is competing too much. I much prefer a vignette of some type than a static background. Lots of creative choices here - should the background texture be reduced?

Well, my voice is only one among many other and if other are satisfied, I would leave it as it is. It's your work after all. With that said my eyes really goes to the brighter parts of the image first but after studying a flower eyes tends to go to the darker parts, thus right corners, and look there for something interesting. After a while I see the leaf/branch-like structure in the background and my eyes tend to study it now all over the image and THIS is a bit distracting to me as it draws my attention from the flower. You wrote that the background is composed of 2 textures so maybe if the one with the leaf/branch-like structure would be less strong it wouldn't draw eyes so much. It's only my opinion which may differ from yours or from the others.

@Tomas Turecek: It's ok, Tomas - you may state your view any time. As I recall (without opening the file) the 2nd layer was a very lightly textured pink layer, which actually helped to fill and mute the printed texture. So, it actually helped fill with more pink and lessened the intensity of the first texture. But, that's what is fun about these. They are custom images and I can go back and change things, because they are non-destructive layers. Try some! :-)

To not be so picky I must say that the image is really lovely as it is and the thing I described above is a trifle.
