To the Core

IOTW, BirdPhotographers.net, a site for nature photography, for the week of 12/04/09 in the 'Out of the Box' category which allows the use of software enhancements.

This image of tree patterns at the end of a log was found on a log cabin in Tennessee. This cross section had such interesting patterns and colors that I set up the macro lens and filled the frame with the entire end of the log on this cabin. Topaz Adjust applied at reduced opacity to enhance the pattern and color.

Aren't the details of nature amazing?

Very well spotted, Barbara, and congrats to IOTW it really deserves it. The patterns and colours are simply amazing but what makes this image for me is the knot in top right part and how the pattern of years changes around it. The enhancement is very well done, before I read the description I was not sure if you did some enhancements or not. Wonderful job!

Absolutely, nature's details are amazing. It is fun to see when you get home and download your pics that sometimes there is a detail that you totally missed. Awesome colors.

Congrats on the IOTW. I saw that over on BPN but hadn't gotten around to commenting there yet. I really like the colors that you've pulled out as well as the detail. Just the right amount without being overdone!

Not easy to come up with a compelling shot of a cut tree. Well done. I'm also kind of fascinated by the tree itself. We know "rings" mean each year. But what about the whole area on the upper right? It's almost as if this tree absorbed another one growing next to it!?! Craay.

Nice work and I am always amazed by the patterns in nature and then sometimes I am confounded by the symmetry that we find! Great Macro shot!
