Soft, Ruffled Tulip

Posted by
Barbara Kile (Ft. Worth, United States) on 1 April 2010 in Plant & Nature and Portfolio.

When I saw this tulip plant, it was a love affair. So, I bought it and I've been having a blast playing with it. When it's bloomed out, I'll plant it!
Image taken with the Lensbaby Composer, with Soft Focus Optic, and the macro lens kit.

Very mystical. I've had the Composer since it first came out, but have hardly used it.

@john4jack: Last week I posted on FB that if someone heard me say I was going to buy another Lensbaby to slap me! :-) (I've bought everyone they make!) I asked for suggestions because I wasn't getting the look I wanted, despite the Soft Focus optic and macro lenses. And who should comment but Kathleen Clemons - ms. Lensbaby. LOL. She said stack one of the 'soft focus' aperture rings - with a big hole, plus a regular 2.8 ring, use the 4x macro lens on the front and get close. I started getting more the look I wanted. Try again and let's see some stuff! Thanks for stopping by, Jack.

So, so beautiful, Barbara ... I love how this shows off the ruffled features of this tulip -- its unique character ... the colors/tones, composition and shallow/soft DOF make for a luscious work of art. I've seen some beautiful Lens Baby work on your other site ... kind of surprised to read what you've written to Jack -- but, then again, I know how frustrating it can be to be working with such shallow DOF! You're tempting me to take the plunge into the Lens Baby composer world ... if for no other reason than to explore new horizons. Thanks for the inspiration this morning, Barbara ... I'm off to the office early -- I have tulips to photograph!

@Ron: Yea - can't wait to see some! I guess I was using a wrong combo of aperture rings with the Soft Focus Optic and had no idea really that I could stack 2 rings together. The LB is a different animal - I can put on my 105 mm macro with a 500D on the end of the lens and I know what I'll get - I have to switch gears with the LB. Thanks, Ron!

Marilla from Turku, Finland

Soft, fragile and really beautiful!

Fantastic photo! Looks like the practice and combination of rings is paying off. I don't know anything about a lensbaby but, like others, I'm getting curious.
