Big Sur Coastline

Posted by
Barbara Kile (Ft. Worth, United States) on 1 September 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I loved the cooler weather on the Monterey Peninsula, even though I was sometimes freezing! :)
I was with a great group of photographers doing the fog, ocean and coastline thing!
No texture, no HDR, just an 88% opacity Orton overlay.

Barbara Lee from Oakland, United States

This is quite lovely, Barbara! I am glad that you enjoyed your time with Don, Gary, and the group. Our coast is amazing in any kind of weather. The Orton effect looks terrific here! Have you tried using Nik Color Efex Pro to get this sort of effect? They do not call the filter Orton, but it is the glow filter, and it works very well. So sorry I missed you - you were so in my backyard, but we had just returned from Europe, and it has taken me days to emerge from the fog of jetlag! Welcome back to the heat!

@Barbara Lee: Thanks, Barbara! I've used the Glow filter and it would be a nice treatment for a fog image. Welcome back home!

Amazing rendering. Orton effet here delivers a very nice and soft painting effect. Wow. Awesome and appealing indeed. Bravo Barbara. really a great work.

Gorgeous color. I like all of the colorful flowers and plants in the foreground. Beautiful!

This is gorgeous. I have always been partial to the Orton effect and these colors work so well with it.

Fun photo. When we lived in the Bay Area (most of my working life), I went to the Monterey-Big Sur area every chance that I got. Only the High Sierra drew me away.

Great POV and I see that there's still a lot of color out...I like the soft touch of your processing.

@Mike: Thanks, and GREAT to have met you, Mike!

B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United States

Beautiful shot. So, you did a photo trip with Don and Gary? How fun. I would love to do that sometime. Were there any other Aminus3 photographers in the group?

2 Sep 2011 4:06am

@B. Thomas: Thank you! Yes, I feel I've known Gary and Don forever. I knew of and communicated with Gary before Am3. I even asked him about Am3 before joining. The only other Am3 was Mike Hall (see post above) who assisted on the last day.

B. Thomas from Arlington, Texas, United States

By the way, welcome back to the Texas heat. We so enjoyed the cool weather in Wyoming and Montana, and have had a hard time adjusting since we got back yesterday.

2 Sep 2011 4:09am

@B. Thomas: Yeah, it was 40 degrees cooler on the peninsula!

Julie L. Brown from Indianapolis, Indiana, United States

Hi Barbara. Gorgeous colors and I like the flowers in the foreground. The treatment is really lovely.
I recognized this scene from my spring 2010 Big Sur workshop with Don and Gary. Was this your first time with them? I'm doing another workshop with them in October in Utah.

2 Sep 2011 9:40am

@Julie L. Brown: Thanks, Julie. How fun you've been on the same workshop! First time with them, but feel like I've known them forever. :)

Mirjam from Kyiv, Ukraine

Beautiful piece of art.

Andrea from Regina, Canada

Wonderful rich colours. Interesting processing with the Orton effect, as it does almost give it a HDR feel (but in a good way).

PS- not a good night for your guys; sorry :((

3 Sep 2011 3:47pm

@john4jack: Well, it was a great comeback, but we have a lot of newbies this year. Our opponent is a good team. I look them to be 5-0 quickly. Our kicker cost us 7 points! Shows how stupid preseason rankings are. I would not have ranked us.

Don Smith from California, United States

Absolutely beautiful composition and processing Barbara. BTW - you are not the only one to "freeze" in our fog. My wife wore two sweatshirts Friday as she walked a golf course in Pacific Grove with our two sons and me! She grew up in England and moved to Carmel as a teenager - you'd think she would be used to it but she is not. We are all hoping for our Indian Summer to arrive soon! I look forward to seeing more of your images.

@Don Smith: Thanks, Don!

This is fabulous! I love that even though I have lived in this area all my life, you have captured this place and presented it in a way that makes me fall in love with it all over again! Sounds like you had a fabulous workshop, I would love to go on one of theirs someday!

The blurred rocks and water in this image provide the perfect dramatic seaside background for the vibrant natural wildflowers. A lovely image.
